When should you contact your union?

Keep scrolling to read about these important topics:

In each newsletter we answer common questions. In this issue we focus on Summer reappointment letters.

  • You are expecting a reappointment letter, but do not receive one.

  • Your reappointment letter is missing a class(es) that you have reappointment rights to.

  • You cannot teach at the time your course(s) is listed on your appointment or reappointment letter and need to write to your chair/director about requesting another time to teach.

  • You have been asked to meet with your department for disciplinary reasons or for reasons that aren’t clear to you.

  • One or more of your classes has been cancelled and the reason cited is unclear or seems off to you (or no reason for the cancellation is provided).

  • You have reappointment rights, and you want to decline reappointment for a semester or academic year.

  • You are unsure whether you have reappointment rights.

  • You don’t know how to sign up for NYU’s healthcare and/or retirement options.

  • You are concerned about recent developments in your department but don’t want to go on record out of fear of retaliation.

  • Have questions about your rights under the contract.

And, when in doubt, reach out!

nyu@actuaw.org

We will not disclose your name to the University without your written affirmative consent to share your name or other identifying information.

Your union rep team has been hard at work fighting to protect your rights under the contract, filing grievances and requests for information, and holding drop-in sessions and town halls to educate the members and answer their pressing questions, amongst other things. Here are some of our latest wins and highlights of the work we’ve been doing behind the scenes:

As a result of a trend in many reappointment letters lacking key information required to be provided to adjunct faculty, the Union emailed every school and most departments throughout NYU to remind them of the required content. Following the outreach we did in advance of the May 2024 reappointment letters, the letters have been noticeably more comprehensive. We continued our outreach efforts throughout NYU in advance of this year’s summer reappointment letters, which were due on March 21 to adjunct faculty with Article X reappointment rights.

See Article IV(A)(2) on page 8 of the contract to see the requirements for appointment and reappointment letters so you can determine if you have the information you are entitled to about your courses and compensation.

There will be a special election next week on April 8-10 for the following positions:

Local 7902 Union
2nd Vice President
2 Open Trustee Positons

Higher Education Council
3 Open Seats to Represent NYU

The Election Committee hosted a Candidate Forum on March 17. If you would like to view a recording of this forum, to learn more about the candidates running in the Spring 2025 Special Election, please email the Election Committee at electioncommittee.7902@gmail.com.

Have you signed your union membership card?

If you haven’t done so, now is the time.

Download the card here, fill out the pdf and add your e-signature in the two designated areas and then email the completed form with your signatures at both the middle and at the bottom of the form to mail@actuaw.org and nyu@actuaw.org.

Note: Your N# can be found on the back of your NYU ID.

If you have any difficulties filling out the pdf, email staff organizer Julia Geiger at jgeiger@actuaw.org

Union membership is not automatic.

If you are an adjunct or part-time faculty member who works 40+ contact hours per academic year (September 1-August 31), or 75+ contact hours of individual instruction or tutoring during a semester, you are eligible to join the union.

The payment of either union dues or an agency fee is a condition of continued employment at NYU.
